Bank House, Newcastle is the first building in a £100 million redevelopment of the Pilgrim Street area of the city.
Once home to a 1960s Bank of England building, which was demolished in 2012, the site is now houses the impressive basement, ground and 14 upper storey, Grade A office building constructed for Taras Properties.
Initial works included breaking out the three-storey underground vaults and bullion runs beneath the former bank – a mammoth task to break through reinforced concrete which was, in some places, several metres thick.
Relocation of a sub-station, diversion and stopping of existing highways and construction of new public realm spaces were also included in the project.
Bank House will play a huge role in revitalising this area of the city, providing jobs for local people and bringing much-needed investment into the area.
Fifty percent of all contractors on the project were employed from the North-East region.
