Bond Street is located at the heart of the city of Chelmsford and links with existing retail on the High Street. It gives the city a vibrant shopping environment catering for the needs of an affluent and thriving population.
The scheme, which sits next to the River Chelmer, involved constructing a 300,000 sq ft retail and leisure development anchored by a large John Lewis department store with basement car park.
Extensive groundwork and water management planning enabled us to construct flood water retention areas adjacent to the River Chelmer and involved detailed liaison with the Environment Agency and other statutory bodies.
It has been designed to provide a combination of open-air shopping, riverside restaurants, cinema and public spaces whilst ensuring that it complements the city’s heritage and creates a fresh, contemporary retail offer. The riverside development anchored by John Lewis has attracted other leading UK high street brands.
The redevelopment of Bond Street was a long-standing aspiration of the council and is seen to play a central role in Chelmsford’s offer as a major retail and leisure destination in the Essex region.
